Introduction
Currently, Khuong is staying with his mother and old grandparents in a low-roofed, rented house of 15m2. Despite the small space, Khuong’s mother still dedicates a study corner for him. In the picture is Khuong’s old study table with a damaged chair. His father had abandoned him before he was born. His mother is a house cleaner for hire with monthly income of VND 800.000 (about SGD 80), which is used to pay the rent and to support Khuong and his grandparents.
Khuong’s teacher describes him as hardworking and fast-learning. He is an excellent student in both grade 2 and 3. He especially likes to draw, and dreams of becoming a scholar.
Updates of Living Conditions:

Khuong and his mother have moved from the cramped house to a nearby house which is opposite a train rail. This house belongs to Khuong’s aunt; Khuong and his mom stay there to take care of the house for his aunt while waiting for clearance order. The small house has an attic which they live in whenever it rains. In summer, they stay in the main floor. It is tidy and better ventilated than their previous house.
Khuong’s mom works as a house cleaner which is an unstable job depending on when the house owners need and call. Fortunately, she has quite regular assignments, so normally soon after she finishes cleaning one house, she can find works in other houses. She usually goes to work from early morning till late afternoon. At noon, Khuong cooks and eats lunch by himself, then cycles to school if his mother is busy.
Khuong’s father has been staying with his mother and son for months after a few years of living far away from them. However, his health is not good and he has no job so he came back to his hometown. As Khuong’s mother told us, their life has improved quite a lot: They have a TV, a bicycle for Khuong to go to school and a bike for his mother to go to work. Those are used stuffs but they are still good enough for them. Some kind neighbors understand the family’s difficulties and gave those stuffs to them to use. Khuong’s bicycle was repaired by his mom. Khuong’s mom often reminds him to try his best in studying, but she no longer can tutor him as there have been too many changes in the curriculum.
Khuong is in secondary school now. His mother sends him to extra classes on Mathematics and literature so that he can catch up with the workload at school.
The family's living condition has also improved a lot. However, Khuong has not achieved excellent student status, since he has not paid enough attention to studying. He needs to study harder in secondary school.
Khuong is quite quiet, timid and not very confident about talking to others.
